In the middle of the nineteenth century, infantry on the battlefield were still stuck with slow, single-shot, muzzle-loading rifles. Even a well-trained soldier could only fire two or three rounds a minute. It was in this world that Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling stepped forward during the Civil War with a radical idea, and what followed would stretch far beyond anything he could have imagined. The Gatling's Logic Gatling was an inventor, and what struck him most was that more soldiers were dying from disease than from gunshots.
